Frequently Asked Questions
What are Bowker Subject Headings?
Bowker subjects are modeled on LC, but are not an exact match for LC. They are "LC style" in that they are of the form "subject--subdivision--subdivision--etc", and we use LC phrasing (like "Algebras, Linear" instead of "Linear Algebra"), but we are less specific than LC.

What is Z39.50?
BooksInPrint.com is a Z39.50 server as well as a client. Libraries with meta searching engines (or what they now call federated searching) can include a Z39.50 search of BooksInPrint.com in their OPAC. This means that Sirsi, for example, can search multiple databases for information, not just the local OPAC, and BooksInPrint.com can be one of those sources. Books In Print information is displayed in the library's OPAC interface.

How much information displays in First Chapter?
We estimate that the vast majority of Chapter One excerpts, more than 97%, are from initial (first chapter) text. They are truncated at about 17,000 characters. This generally represents 10-15 pages of book text. It may represent all or part of the first chapter. If it is not the full first chapter, then the excerpt contains the notation "Continues." Excerpts containing the full first chapter are usually those of fiction works.
