Hot Off the Press!
Bowker Back in Beantown!
Wow, it's that time again! It's been two years, and PLA is back, and Bowker has more things than ever to show you! (We're so excited -- we're even a little too exclamation point happy!)
Bowker Booth #2513 is exploding with news! We have a brand new readers’ advisory tool called Fiction Connection, which is complimentary (yes, you read that right, complimentary) with all BooksInPrint.com and GlobalBooksInPrint.com subscriptions.
Stop by on opening night from 4-7pm, see a quick demo, and you'll receive a Fiction Connection lanyard (while supplies last) that you can use to hold your PLA badge.
A more in-depth Fiction Connection presentation will be given at 4:00pm, during the PLA New Product Showcase. This demonstration will be held in the Hynes Convention Center Room 109, and will be conducted by Fiction Connection Product Manager, Melissa Kuzma, MLS. It will include a question and answer period with AquaBrowser (the technology behind Fiction Connection) representatives. Lanyards will also be distributed at this event.
Enter to win a Bowker Bobblehead by joining us for short presentations on the following topics. One winner will be chosen after each presentation:

Promoting Fiction Connection to Your Patrons

Letting your patrons know about your new resources has never been easier. Bowker has developed simple “cut and paste” copy that you can use to announce Fiction Connection to your staff and your patrons.
This text, which can be found at BowkerSupport.com, can be used for your newsletter, website, or a story in your local newspaper. Two versions of the patron announcement are offered, as well as various Fiction Connection logos to accompany your story. The internal announcement copy can be posted on your break room bulletin board, employee bulletin, or for flyers.
Similar copy for other Bowker library products is also offered on BowkerSupport.com.
Take-away instruction cards for your patrons are also in development and will be sent to your library soon.

Make Sure You Have the Latest Fiction Titles
Do you have the latest fiction titles for your library?
In February, H.W. Wilson introduced a brand new online Fiction Catalog that features a selective list of classic and contemporary works recommended for a general adult audience, written in or translated into English. The best authors and their most widely read works in literary and popular fiction, old and new, are listed, including mysteries, science fiction, fantasy, Westerns, and romance.
This core list of 7,000 titles is continually updated and includes complete bibliographic information as well as the ability to view reviews from Wilson’s Book Review Digest Plus database.

Use the new Fiction Catalog with Bowker’s Book Analysis System to instantly evaluate your collection. The electronic comparison will allow you to see which titles recommended by Wilson that your library does not have in your collection. You can then use the enriched data provided by BooksInPrint.com to make your selection and collection development decisions.
Since Wilson’s Fiction Catalog is continually updated, you can use the Book Analysis System to keep your collection current and make sure you always have the latest titles. Bowker’s Book Analysis System can be used with all of the Wilson Catalogs: the Public Library Catalog, the Children’s Catalog, the Fiction Catalog, the Middle and Junior High School Library Catalog, and the Senior High School Library Catalog.

Bowker in the Classroom
New home for the ...

Bowker’s Library School Initiative recently launched a comprehensive website at BowkerSupport.com/schools/
This new site details the program, which reaches out to graduate schools with MLIS degrees and offers complimentary use of Bowker products in the classroom. Bowker’s Educational Liaison, Paul Hoffman, will then visit participating schools to present hands-on training and take-away materials that students can use in their future library positions.
"I was very pleased to have Paul Hoffman address my graduate class in Collection Development. Mr. Hoffman is an experienced teacher and immediately engaged the students in his presentation. It was very valuable for them to learn first hand of the potential of Bowker’s Global Books in Print and Book Analysis System as selection and collection management tools. I would certainly invite Mr. Hoffman back to my class another year."
Dr. Joy Bennett
Graduate School of Library
and Information Studies
McGill University, Montreal
Participating schools in the Bowker Library School Initiative are given the opportunity to weave BooksInPrint.com or GlobalBooksInPrint.com into their existing curriculum. Also, schools are granted access for their students on a semester basis, so that instructors can feel free to give assignments using the products.
Bowker products can be used for various library school topics, including collection development, acquisition, reference, selection, collection analysis, and with the introduction of Fiction Connection, even readers’ advisory. All accredited library schools are eligible for the program.
If your school is interested, you can contact Paul Hoffman directly at Paul.Hoffman@bowker.com or visit the website at BowkerSupport.com/schools/
