ALCTS Bowker/Ulrich’s Serials Librarianship Award
It's that time of year again -- time to announce the winner of the ALCTS Bowker/Ulrich's Serials Librarianship Award presented by the Serials Section of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) Division of ALA. This annual award is given in recognition of distinguished and ongoing contributions to serials librarianship. The 2005 recipient is Dan Tonkery, Vice President of Business Development for EBSCO Information Services.
Individuals qualify for the Bowker/Ulrich's Serials Librarianship Award by: demonstrating leadership in serials-related activities through their participation in professional associations, groups, and/or library education programs; making significant contributions to serials literature; and, in general, striving to enhance our comprehension of the serials world.
As this year's recipient, Mr. Tonkery is being recognized for decades of service and ongoing professional involvement in the serials industry. Mr. Tonkery began his professional career as Serials Cataloger for the National Library of Medicine and was deeply involved in the founding and building of the Library of Congress's National Serials Data Program and CONSER Program. From the library environment, he moved into the serials business world, holding executive positions with key players in the industry: the Faxon Company (including as president); Horizon Information Services; Readmore, Inc.; and TDT Ventures, before moving to his present position at EBSCO. Throughout his career, Mr. Tonkery has been actively involved in serials organizations including ALA and the North American Serials Interest Group (serving as NASIG president in 1999/2000). He has also contributed to the serials literature and served for many years as a member of the editorial board for Serials Review.
Mr. Tonkery will be presented with his award at the ALA Annual Conference in Chicago in June. Bowker will be sponsoring an Ulrich's Award reception at the conference, to be attended by Mr. Tonkery and his invited guests, the 2005 ALCTS executive and selection committees, past Ulrich's award winners, and several distinguished members of the academic library community.
The Bowker/Ulrich's Serials Librarianship Award is a matter of great importance and pride among serials librarians, and Bowker is proud of its ongoing sponsorship. ALCTS will formally acknowledge Bowker's support of the award at the ALCTS Awards Presentation at the Annual Conference.
